What is Composition scheme in GST?

If you run a Small businesses with annual turnover less than Rs. 1 crore* ( Rs. 75 Lakhs for NE States) can opt for Composition scheme.

*GST Council decided to increase the limit to Rs. 1.5 crores but notification is awaited.

When should a business opt for it?

Composition dealers will pay nominal tax rates based on the type of business:

  • If you are a Composition dealer then you are required to file one quarterly return instead of three monthly returns filed by normal tax payers
  • Composition scheme businesses cannot issue taxable invoices, meaning that they can collect tax from their customers and are required to pay the tax out of their own money, pocket / revenue
  • Businesses that have opted for Composition Scheme cannot claim any input tax credit

Composition scheme will not be applicable to following businesses:

  • Service providers (selling services)
  • Inter-state sellers (having multiple businesses in different states)
  • E-commerce sellers
  • Supplier of non-taxable goods
  • Manufacturer of Notified Goods
